Stewardship: The Joy of Giving
As the church is about to begin work on the budget for 2016, chances are it will come in higher than last year. But the budget is not what giving is about. And it's not the trustee’s job, nor Rev. Andy's job, to ask the congregation to give more to meet our budget. Our church doesn't belong to the trustees or our minister; it belongs to all of us.
The faithful stewards who built Second Congregational Church 187 years ago passed that care on to us. It's now up to us to take care of its physical, as well as, spiritual needs. There is no "they" in this, each and every one of us are responsible for our church.
We too can be faithful stewards right now by showing our gratitude to God by leading generous lives. I believe we receive great joy in giving. It feels good to give, whether monetarily or in a hundred other ways. Think about how generous we feel throughout the four weeks of Advent, when we live out God's message of hope, peace, joy and love. My hope is we can find peace within our community, feel joy in giving and find love in Christ, enough to carry us through the entire year. Give until it feels good and then give some more. We are privileged to have a beautiful church, a full-time minister, music, missions and ministries, a Sunday School, and most of all, each other.
